The mattress decides how you sleep, and its size decides the room. A Queen takes a 160 × 200 cm mattress, a King a 180 × 200 cm one. Before choosing, see the guide Bed sizes in Portugal: double, Queen and King.

On our beds, the mattress is chosen on the product page: the Sense Gel, with pocket springs, about 27 cm deep, and the Maxi Confort, with springs, firm and reversible, about 22 cm deep.

Choose by feel and by season. Linen is cool and gets softer with washing. Cotton percale is cool and matte. Cotton sateen is softer, has a gentle sheen and is warmer. Allow 2 to 3 sets per bed: one on the bed, one clean and, with the third, one in the wash.

The right pillow depends on how you sleep. On your side, a high pillow that fills the space between shoulder and head. On your back, a medium pillow with some support. On your front, a low, soft pillow.

A bedroom needs at least 4 light points: one on the ceiling, for tidying and cleaning; one on each side of the bed, for reading; and one in a corner, for low light at the end of the day. Choose warm light, 2700 to 3000 K.

Bedside lamps can stand on the table or hang 30 to 50 cm above the top. The measurements are in the guide How high to hang a pendant light. The DIVA, in marble and metal, is 41.7 cm high and 32 cm in diameter.

As a general guide, the top of the bedside table sits at the height of the top of the mattress, within about 8 cm. That way the lamp, the book and the glass of water are within reach without getting up. Leave only a small gap between the table and the bed, enough to make the bed. Clothes on show tire the eye before sleep. The wardrobe holds what hangs; the chest of drawers holds what is folded, and its top takes perfumes and jewellery. In front of the wardrobe, leave 90 cm clear: an open door takes about 60 cm.

Beside the bed, the rug is the first place your feet land. Under a double bed, it should extend 45 to 60 cm on each side and at the foot. For a Queen, a 200 × 300 cm rug, laid across, meets this measurement.

To sleep well, the room should be dark. Combine 2 layers: a light fabric for the day and an opaque fabric, or a blackout lining, for the night. Hang the track about 15 cm above the window and let the curtain reach the floor.

To see your whole body, the mirror should be at least half the height of the person using it. A floor mirror of 160 cm or more works for the whole family. Lean it against the wall near the wardrobe, where the window light falls from the front or the side.

Pictures and wallpaper work best behind the bed: they decorate the room without being the first thing you see when you wake up. A picture over the headboard should be about 2/3 of the width of the bed and hang 15 to 25 cm above it.
