Headboard for a divan bed: height and measurements
How tall and how wide the headboard of a divan bed should be, how to measure it from the mattress, and the measurements of our 6 divan beds.
Short answer
100–120 cm
from the floor to the top of a divan headboard, with 40 cm above the mattress
On a divan bed, also called a box bed, the headboard should be 100 to 120 cm from the floor and rise at least 40 cm above the top of the mattress, so you can lean against it. In width, it should be at least as wide as the divan base. On our divan beds, the headboard is 100 cm high and, with a 28 cm mattress, 45 cm of it shows above the mattress.
A divan is an upholstered base that goes down to the floor, with the mattress on top. With no visible legs, the headboard is what gives the bed its design. The general rules on height, width and fabric are in the guide Headboards: height, width and proportion. This guide covers the measurements that matter on a divan, and those of the 6 divan beds in our shop.
01The ideal headboard height on a divan bed
Measure the headboard from the top of the mattress, not only from the floor. To lean back and read, the headboard should rise at least 40 cm above the mattress. From the floor, most headboards are between 100 and 120 cm high.
On a divan, as on any bed, the top of the mattress should be 50 to 60 cm from the floor. With the mattress at 55 cm, a 100 cm headboard leaves 45 cm on view and a 120 cm headboard leaves 65 cm. A mattress topper takes away from the visible part the thickness it adds. To see where the height of the mattress comes from, read the guide Double bed height: frame, mattress and bedside table.
02Divan, box bed or bed on legs
Divan and box bed are 2 names for the same idea: an upholstered base with no visible legs, on which the mattress rests. On a bed with legs, you can see the floor underneath and the bed looks lighter. On a divan, the base goes down to the floor, and base and headboard read as a single volume.
The height can be the same. On our beds, the divan base is 30 cm high, and the frame of the bed on legs is also 30 cm (29 cm on the ECHO). The headboard has the same measurements in both versions. The choice is about design, not size. The beds on legs are in the Beds collection.
03How wide the headboard should be: standard sizes
Headboards are sold by the width of the mattress they are made for: 140, 150, 160 or 180 cm. The rule is to be at least as wide as the divan base. Any narrower, and the headboard looks too small for the bed. The divan base is always slightly wider than the mattress: on ours, 168 cm for a 160 cm mattress and 188 cm for a 180 cm one.
- As wide as the divan base: the headboard follows the base, and the bedside tables sit beside it. This is the design of the ECHO SOMMIER, the HALO SOMMIER, the WILLOW SOMMIER and the BREEZE SOMMIER: 167 to 168 cm in Queen and 187 to 188 cm in King.
- Wider than the divan base: it extends to the sides and gains presence on the wall. The AURA SOMMIER and the FRAME SOMMIER have headboards of 200 cm in Queen and 220 cm in King, for a 168 and a 188 cm base.
To find out which mattress size suits your bedroom, see the guide Bed sizes in Portugal: double, Queen and King.

04Wall-mounted headboards
There are 2 ways to give a divan a headboard: it comes with the bed, as on our models, or it is fixed to the wall. On the wall, the bottom edge should sit about 8 to 10 cm below the top of the mattress. That way, there is no gap between the headboard and the mattress for the pillows to slip into.
Before drilling, measure from the floor to the top of the made-up mattress, with the slatted base and the topper, if you use one. The bottom and top edges of the headboard are marked from that line.
05Our divan beds: the measurements
All 6 divan beds have a 30 cm high base and come in Queen and King. Like the beds on legs, they need a bed base: the Basic or the Lift Storage Bed Base, and the mattress, are chosen separately on the product page. In the technical drawings, with a 28 cm mattress, the top of the mattress is 55 cm from the floor and the headboard shows 45 cm above it, 44 cm on the HALO SOMMIER.
- ECHO SOMMIER: headboard 100 cm high and 168 cm wide in Queen. It takes up 214 cm from the wall to the foot.
- BREEZE SOMMIER: headboard 100 × 167 cm in Queen. It takes up 214 cm.
- WILLOW SOMMIER: headboard 100 × 168 cm in Queen. It takes up 211 cm.
- HALO SOMMIER: headboard 99 × 168 cm in Queen. It takes up 214 cm.

In the shop, the simple slatted base, the Lift Storage Bed Base and the Maxi Confort and Sense Gel mattresses come in 160 × 200 and 180 × 200 cm, the Queen and King sizes. To see the divan beds in a furnished bedroom, see the Bedroom page.

07Frequently asked questions
What is the ideal headboard height for a box bed?
Between 100 and 120 cm from the floor, with at least 40 cm above the top of the mattress. Any lower, and your back rests on the wall rather than on the headboard.
What are the standard headboard sizes?
In width, headboards follow the mattress: 140, 150, 160 or 180 cm, or slightly more. In height, most are between 100 and 120 cm from the floor.
Should the headboard be wider than the divan base?
It does not have to be, but it should not be narrower. As wide as the base, it leaves room for the bedside tables beside it. Wider, as on the AURA SOMMIER and the FRAME SOMMIER, it gains presence on the wall.
Does a 140 cm headboard fit a Queen divan?
It looks too narrow. A Queen divan base is about 168 cm wide, so it needs a headboard of that width or more.
