Queen or King bed: which to choose

Queen or King: the difference is 20 cm of width. How to decide by room size, walkways, who sleeps in the bed and the bedside tables.

Short answer

20 cm

wider for the King: the length is the same as the Queen

A Queen bed takes a 160 × 200 cm mattress and a King bed a 180 × 200 cm one. The length is the same; the King is 20 cm wider. Choose the King if the headboard wall is 3.10 m or more and the bed is shared by 2 adults who need room, or by a small child or a pet as well. In a narrower bedroom, the Queen gives each person 80 cm and keeps the walkways clear.

The measurements of each size, from the traditional double to the Super King, are in the guide Bed sizes in Portugal: double, Queen and King. This guide is about the decision: the size of the bedroom, the walkways around the bed, how many people sleep in it, the bedside tables and the mattress. Our beds and divan beds come in both sizes.

01The only difference is the width

Queen and King have the same length: a 200 cm mattress. The difference is 20 cm of width. Shared by 2 people, the Queen gives each 80 cm and the King gives each 90 cm, the width of a single mattress.

The same applies to the whole bed, with the frame and the headboard. Our beds take up 214 cm from the wall to the foot in both sizes (211 cm for the WILLOW and 236 cm for the FRAME). In width, the frame is 168 cm in Queen and 188 cm in King. So the question is always the same: is the headboard wall wide enough for another 20 cm?

02The size of the bedroom: start with the headboard wall

On each side of the bed, leave 60 to 75 cm clear, to get in and out of bed and to make it. At the foot, 60 to 75 cm to walk past. With our beds, the numbers work out like this:

  • Queen: 168 cm of bed plus 2 walkways means a wall of 2.90 to 3.20 m.
  • King: 188 cm of bed plus 2 walkways means a wall of 3.10 to 3.40 m.
  • In the other direction: 214 cm of bed plus the walkway at the foot means 2.75 to 2.90 m, for Queen and King alike.

Below 3.10 m on the headboard wall, the walkways beside a King are at the limit or below it. In that case, the Queen works better. From 3.10 m, both sizes work and the choice comes down to who sleeps in the bed.

03How many people sleep in the bed

  • 2 adults: a Queen suits most couples. A King gives more room to those who move a lot at night or wake up when the other person moves.
  • With a small child or a pet: the King is the more comfortable choice. The extra 20 cm make a difference when 3 share the bed.
  • For tall people: the size changes nothing. Queen and King are both 200 cm long.

04The bedside tables

The bedside table sits next to the headboard, in the clear strip beside the bed. So that strip must be at least as wide as the table. Our bedside tables are 46 to 54 cm wide, from the VOID to the MUSE, and stay within the 60 to 75 cm walkway, with a Queen or a King.

On the AURA and the FRAME, the headboard is wider than the bed: 200 cm in Queen and 220 cm in King. The tables sit beside the headboard, and the calculation starts from it. With 2 tables 50 cm wide, such as the CALM or the FORM, headboard and tables take up 3 m in Queen and 3.20 m in King. The right table height is in the guide Bedside tables: what height and what measurements to choose.

05The mattress, the slatted base and the bedding

It is the mattress that sets the size of the bed. Our beds and divan beds are designed for 160 × 200 cm (Queen) or 180 × 200 cm (King) mattresses. A mattress of any other size sits loose inside the frame. For a bed in another size, you can request a customised piece: we assess each request individually.

In the shop, the simple slatted base, the Lift Storage Bed Base and the Maxi Confort and Sense Gel mattresses come in both sizes. Sheets, duvet covers and mattress protectors are also chosen to the size of the bed.

The height does not change with the size: Queen or King, the frame is 30 cm high. To get the mattress height right, see the guide Double bed height: frame, mattress and bedside table.

06The way into the bedroom

A King headboard is 187 to 220 cm wide, depending on the model, and it is the piece that turns corners least easily. Before choosing, measure the front door, the stairs, the lift and the bedroom door. Before the bed goes into production, we confirm these measurements with you.

To plan the rest of the bedroom, from lighting to storage, see the guide How to decorate a couple's bedroom and the Bedroom page.

08Frequently asked questions

What size is a Queen bed?

A Queen mattress is 160 × 200 cm. The whole bed is larger: ours are 168 cm wide and take up 214 cm from the wall to the foot, headboard included.

What size is a King bed?

A King mattress is 180 × 200 cm. On our beds, the frame is 188 cm wide and the same length as the Queen.

Does a King bed work in a 3 × 3 m bedroom?

It is tight. With 188 cm of bed on a 3 m wall, 56 cm are left on each side, below the recommended 60 cm. In a room like this, the Queen keeps the walkways clear.

Which is better for a couple, Queen or King?

The Queen suits most couples. The King is worth it if the room is wide enough and a child or a pet shares the bed, or if one partner wakes up when the other moves.
