Bed sizes in Portugal: double, Queen and King

ECHO bed with a vertically channelled upholstered headboard, in a bedroom with a rug and a wooden bedside table

Short answer: in Portugal, the traditional double bed takes a 140 × 190 cm or 150 × 190 cm mattress. A Queen takes 160 × 200 cm and a King 180 × 200 cm. The King is the larger: it is 20 cm wider than the Queen. The whole bed, with its frame and headboard, is always larger than the mattress. Allow an extra 8 to 10 cm in width and 10 to 15 cm in length.

When people talk about bed sizes, they nearly always mean the mattress. The mattress sets the size. But it is the whole bed, with the headboard and the sides, that has to get through the door and leave room in the bedroom. This guide separates the two.

Mattress sizes in Portugal

These are the most common sizes on the Portuguese market. They are general guidance, as some brands have in-between sizes:

  • Single: 90 × 190 cm or 90 × 200 cm.
  • Double: 140 × 190 cm, or 140 × 200 cm.
  • Wide double: 150 × 190 cm, or 150 × 200 cm.
  • Queen: 160 × 200 cm.
  • King: 180 × 200 cm.
  • Super King: 200 × 200 cm.

Per person, a 140 cm double gives 70 cm of width. That is the width of a narrow single bed. A Queen gives each person 80 cm and a King 90 cm.

Which is bigger, Queen or King?

The King. Both are 200 cm long, but the King is 180 cm wide and the Queen 160 cm.

The Queen is the most common choice for a main bedroom with 3 m or more on the headboard wall. The King needs a wider room and suits people who sleep with children or a pet, or who wake when the other person moves.

What is the difference between a double and a Queen?

The traditional double is 140 cm wide and often 190 cm long. The Queen is 160 × 200 cm. That is 20 cm more in width and 10 cm more in length. For anyone over 1.80 m, the 200 cm makes a difference: their feet no longer hang off the mattress.

Our beds come in Queen or King.

How much space the whole bed takes

The frame adds width and length to the mattress. The headboard adds depth. Using the measurements on the product pages:

  • ECHO: 168 cm wide in Queen and 188 cm in King. From the wall to the foot of the bed, with the headboard, it takes 214 cm. The headboard is 1 m high.
  • WILLOW: 168 cm in Queen and 188 cm in King. It takes 211 cm from the wall to the foot.
  • AURA: the bed is 168 cm in Queen, but the headboard is wider than the bed: 200 cm in Queen and 220 cm in King.
  • FRAME: the headboard is 200 cm in Queen and 220 cm in King, and 32 cm deep, because it includes side niches and a shelf. It takes 236 cm from the wall to the foot.

On beds with a headboard wider than the bed, the headboard is the measurement that counts for the wall.

How much space to leave around the bed

  • On each side: 70 cm to move around and make the bed. A Queen with a 160 cm mattress needs a wall of about 3 m. A King needs 3.20 m.
  • At the foot of the bed: at least 60 cm to walk past. If you put a bench at the foot, add its depth.
  • To the wardrobe: 90 cm. The open door takes about 60 cm and the other 30 cm are for the person standing in front of it.

If the bedside tables are part of the calculation, add their width and 5 to 10 cm of clearance from the bed. The right measurements are in the guide Bedside tables: what height and what measurements to choose.

Before ordering, measure the route

The headboard of a Queen is over 1.60 m wide and is the part that turns corners least easily. Measure the front door, the staircase, the lift and the bedroom door. Before the bed goes into production, we confirm these measurements with you.

Can I use the mattress I already have?

Yes, if it matches the bed size. Our beds are made for 160 × 200 cm (Queen) or 180 × 200 cm (King) mattresses. A 150 × 190 cm mattress does not work in a Queen frame: it leaves gaps at the sides and the foot, and the frame cannot be adjusted afterwards.

On all our beds, the base and the mattress are chosen separately on the product page, before the purchase button. There are 2 mattresses: the Sense Gel, with pocket springs, about 27 cm deep, and the Maxi Confort, with springs, firm and reversible, about 22 cm deep. The mattress depth changes the height of the bed, and with it the right height for the bedside table.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a double bed in Portugal?

The traditional double mattress is 140 × 190 cm. Today, 160 × 200 cm (Queen) and 180 × 200 cm (King) are increasingly common.

Which is bigger, the Queen or the King?

The King, at 180 × 200 cm. The Queen is 160 × 200 cm.

What size of room does a Queen bed need?

On the headboard wall, about 3 m, to leave 70 cm clear on each side. In the other direction, the bed's 214 cm plus 60 cm to walk past at the foot comes to about 2.75 m.

Does a 150 cm mattress work in a Queen bed?

Not well. A Queen frame is made for 160 × 200 cm, and a smaller mattress sits loose inside it.

Do the mattress and base come with the bed?

No, on none of our models. The bed is the frame, with the headboard and upholstered sides. The base and mattress are chosen separately on the product page.
